I thought I did this one already, but while I was double checking all my assignments, I saw this was missing. So here it is.

I believe Gilmor is dead on with his thoughts on local stations simplfying news. Sensationalism is not quite as prominent as the selectivism going on in local news stations. Gilmor also talks about personal journalism and how it has exsisted long ago. I believe it’s the future of news. People are so used to blogs, whether is politics or gossip. Distinguished news sources such as CNN and the New York Times have all added blogs to their offerings. It is an appropriate form of information, as Gilmor says our attention span was decreased with time.

Personal, portable computers are also a huge factor in the changes of media. We all are now given the same opportunity to report news, racing against real news stations if we wanted to. Now it’s all about who’s there and who go the shot. From there, anybody can upload the image and be given just as many internet hits as any big station. When Gilmore talks about September 11 and how the news covered everything, I agreed with Gilmor on how amazing it was to be able to look at coverage from all over the world. We are able to get perspectives from locals of New York City, all the way to the opposite coast in San Francisco. Gilmor gives a thorough, in-depth view of how new media has emerged and the benefits of it all.

I agree completely with Dan Gillmor’s thoughts and ideas about Creative Commons and welcoming other people’s ideas to build on his own. While I do respect copyright laws and the individual unique ideas of writers everywhere I think that more and more our media and news sources belong to the world as one community. In sharing and being open to all kinds of contributors whether they be credentialed journalists or just plain citizens who have something to say, we are validating our rights to free speech and open debate

In the last three chapters of the book, Gillmor talked about some legal mistakes that journalists could easily get caught in. These related to libel laws and copyrights. Even though these laws do not apply strictly to bloggers, they also have to be careful when starting their blogs. During these chapters, Gillmor mentioned some ways to avoid these mistakes or to protect ourselves out of these troubles. He also gave some suggestions for those amateur bloggers who are not sure what they write or information they get from. It’s kind of scary to think about one little mistake could damage people’s reputation and get journalists/bloggers themselves trouble.

In this second part of the book, Gillmor emphasized the transition from print journalism to internet journalism. What he meant in this section is journalists today must get to know the new media type, which is blogs, besides the traditional media outlets. Blogs can be written not only by journalists, but also by non-journalists.

As we know, some of the popular blog websites, like PerezHilton.com or JustJared.com, become people’s favorite. There are hundreds people logging in these websites. What people like about these types of website is they can get news that might not appear on newspaper or in other sources. They also can leave their comments or opinions for what they have read.

As Gillmor mentioned in his book, some of companies start doing blog. It is one of the best ways to people get to know their companies. It is also the convenient way to communicate with all employees in the company.

I’m really amazed by the facts of how blogs have influenced to modern media technology.
