I guess this is something we could have all seen coming. As technology advances and media becomes easier to find and create, the old way of doing things slowly dies out. This is exactly what we’re seeing today and a perfect example is the newspaper. Over the years, print as been slowly dying while blogs and internet have started taking over. The one story that I recently heard was about the SF chronicle and how it had started laying off employees. Now keep in mind, this is the fourth or fifth largest newspaper nationwide (or so I’ve read), so it’s really hard to tell what will happen to the company. More on the story can be read here: Article on last Novembers Layoffs.
It seems that no newspaper outlet is safe if one of the largest newspaper companies is having problems. Recent reports have been showing that this is the second largest decline in newspaper history, next to the “1950 decline, which is when they started tracking annual revenue.” Recent Accounts.
Now I’m not a big reader of the newspaper, I hardly find the time to even check out current events online, but seeing these figures it really does worry me. First newspapers, then what? In any case it’s
definitely not going to be good. Given all the bad news, it still seems people are finding ways to help keep the business alive and giving out tips on what they should do. In this article Keeping it alive. the author does a good job explaining what newspaper companies need to do in order to survive. In any case, things look grim but I’m sure in a few years time, when the economy picks back up, many of these top newspaper companies will recover.
